Summary

  • Recommended by Steve in context of Tech in MTSs review - as an example of how the incorporation of a new technology left challenges. Said I might not immediately see why he recommended it.
  • Read it, skimming parts that were details of mining. Had a lot of specifics I didn't need.
  • Old way of mining coal had everyone equally trained, and a very tight social system that worked well. It meant that the same miners worked together for years, with high degrees of trust and transparency.
  • New methods used larger teams, very little social support - and while those methods were brought over from engineering where they could work, in the dangerous, dark, underground mines, taking out the social support system creates problems.
  • They spend a lot of time in the details - but the basic takeaway is that you can't forget the human element.
